Door-to-Door Sales People

This is sort of a re-post from an email I sent to someone who deserves to hear things first hand (therefore you are hearing this second-hand unless you are that person)....

Some guy knocked on my door today wanting to sell me windows.  He wanted to come back on some random later date and give me an estimate for replacing all my windows.  He had a terrible pitch and I could tell it was a pitch that he had learned (poorly).  Once upon a time before the internet ever existed (yes, I'm freaking old, so deal with it), I had a job selling encyclopedias door-to-door (absolutely unbelievable but also very true), so I know a door-to-door sales pitch when I hear one and his was particularly bad.  He also definitely wanted to talk to a man, i.e., not me, so he asked me whether I was the "sole homeowner".  I probably should have lied, but then he might have wanted to come back, so I told him I was and then he looked all surprised like I couldn't possibly own the house myself (on my scullery maid-like female wages), so he asked what I did.  I told him "something that makes enough money for me to afford this house".  He probably thinks I'm a call girl or something now.   But the estimate process would take like 1.5 hours.  Who has that kind of time?  I politely told him I wasn't interested.  I must be getting soft in my old age.  In my prime I would have been less polite.  Damn.  I miss the old me sometimes....
